The Midfield Muddle

Last seasons dramatic slump of form during the winter months highlighted Chelsea's desperate need for a playmaking force in the centre of the pitch. With quality finishers in Drogba, Anelka, Malouda, Sturridge, Kalou and Torres (maybe!), quality balls should enhance the team further. Especially with the case of Torres, he thrived on the service he was given, and has taken a lot of time to realise he needs to create chances for himself sometimes at Chelsea. With André Villas-Boas seemingly in the market for one, I will analyse the players that are rumoured to be coming, and the ones we already have:

Rumoured Players

Luka Modric
Stats
Age: 25
Height: 5ft 8ins
Weight: 67kg
2010/11 League Stats
Games played: 32
Goals: 3
Assists: 2
Strengths: Quick with or without the ball, Great vision and passing, Has the ability to score from long range, Can use both feet effectively
Weaknesses: Small player often gets bullied by larger teams, Fairly weak in tackles, Slight figure can lead to injuries
Summary: A good playmaker, although a small amount of assists reflects the fact that he often creates the opportunity for others to assist. He uses a lot of deft touches, flicks and skill to get past a player, creating space for himself and others. He has stated his ambition to play top quality football with Chelsea, although Tottenham are unlikely to sell him for anything less than £35 million. Although he wants to be at Chelsea, I would say due to Spur's stubbornness, a huge price would be needed. A better deal can be found.

Javier Pastore
Stats
Age: 22
Height: 6ft 2ins
Weight: 75kg
2010/11 League Stats
Games Played: 35
Goals: 11
Assists: 5
Strengths: Great vision on the ball, High amounts of control on the ball, his great skill allows him to create space for him and others, often referred to as a youthful Kaka, Graceful when in possession.
Weaknesses: A small player without great pace can often be pushed out by large teams and players
Summary: Pastore is obviously a talented player, with a lot of potential. He's stated his desire to leave Palmero for a bigger club, and with the men running Palmero saying a move is likely, he may well be a blue come the new season, the main worry being a high price tag likely.

Wesley Sneijder
Stats
Age: 27
Height: 5ft 7in
Weight: 67kg
2010/11 League Stats
Games Played: 25
Goals: 4
Assists: 5
Strengths: High amounts of pace as well as strength for a small man, He is good with both feet and possesses a dangerous long shot, one of the best in the world from the dead ball
Weaknesses: His lack of height can mean that he is shutout in games where the long, high ball dominates
Summary: One of the best playmakers in the world outside of Barcelona, Sneijder would be welcome at Chelsea, but is unlikely to join, if he were to go anywhere from Milan, Manchester seems like the destination with Sir Alex needing a playmaker

Samir Nasri
Stats
Age: 24
Height: 5ft 10ins
Weight: 75kg
2010/11 League Stats
Games Played: 30
Goals: 10
Assists: 1
Strengths: Great passing ability and vision, as well as skill and flair, with a good eye for goal
Weaknesses: Not much of a team player, doesn't get back much with the team, inconsistent, as can be seen with last season where he started red hot, then faded with his team in the latter half of the season
Summary: A good player, but not a chelsea one, lacking in consistency and team effort, he fits the arsenal model well, could be a good player if he sorted these problems out, which probably explained the interest from both Manchester clubs.

Kaka
Stats
Age: 29
Height: 6ft 1in
Weight: 73kg
2010/2011 League Stats
Games Played: 14
Goals: 7
Assists: 4
Strengths: High amounts of skill, Great shooting and Vision
Weaknesses: Poor in the air, Injury prone
Summary: His Real Madrid career has never really taken off, with injury and others in the way, so the exit door could be the way, unlikely to want to leave but their would be definite interest from our side of things.

Already at the Club

Josh McEachran
Stats
Age: 18
Height: 5ft 10in
Weight: 66kg
2010/11 League Stats
Games Played: 9
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
Strengths: Strong for a man of his size, great vision and passing, good tackling, versatile in midfield
Weaknesses: Small player who can be outmuscled, lack of experience at senior level,
Summary: A promising talent for the future, experienced some football at first team level under Carlo Ancelotti, but as a defensive mid unlike his preferred attacking midfielder, which Villas-Boas has seemed to realise with McEachran relishing the role on tour, putting in some good performances

Frank Lampard
Stats
Age: 33
Height: 6ft 0ins
Weight: 79kg
2010/11 League Stats
Games Played: 24
Goals: 10
Assists: 4
Strengths: Brilliantly consistent, great shooting accuracy and power, good from set pieces as well as wide range of passing
Weaknesses: Ageing star, poor tackling, doesn't like to switch out of his main position in midfield
Summary: A Chelsea legend, one of the premier leagues stars of the last decade, not a playmaker though and relishes the box to box role he holds, not the player we are looking for in the creative role.

Yossi Benayoun
Stats
Age: 31
Height: 5ft 8in
Weight: 70kg
2010/11 League Stats
Games Played: 6
Goals: 1
Assists: 0
Strengths: Brilliant vision on the ball, great link with Torres, can score goals in important situations
Weaknesses: Lightweight, can easily be forced off the ball, a bit inconsistent and doesn't push play forward too much
Summary: An out and out playmaker, one of the most underrated players of the last years in the league, he can form a great link with Torres, who may thrive on his old Liverpool service

Jon Obi Mikel
Stats
Age: 24
Height: 6ft 2ins
Weight: 81kg
2010/11 Career Stats
Games Played: 25
Goals: 0
Assists: 1
Strengths: Strong in the tackle and on the pitch, Fearless in the challenge, Great distribution from deep
Weaknesses: Poor discipline, but as he has aged this has ironed out
Summary: Not an attacking playmaker, but more of a ball winner and distributor, which he does fantastically.

Looking at the options available here, the current club options don't fit the bill, Lampard not being a playmaker, Mikel being to deep a player, Benayoun being too inconsistent and McEachran being too inexperienced. Signing a playmaker such as Pastore or Modric would be brilliant for the club, spurring McEachran on as a player and giving the strikers, especially Torres, a well needed stream of chances to latch on to.
