Chelsea's 0-0 draw at Stoke showed Chelsea in two lights, one with their defence being extremely strong and physical against a strong Stoke attack that bullies a lot of other teams defence. On the other hand, it did highlight the need for a clinical midfield an wings that can cut a defence apart after a second half full of Chelsea pressure yielded no goals, albeit two 'dodgy' decisions from Mark Halsey hindered us slightly. André Villas-Boas himself has said he would like to add to the midfield and the wings, but what players would he sign?
Eden Hazard
Age: 20
Nationality: Belgian
Position: Winger/Attacking Mid
Current Club: Lille
Value: £20 million
At 20 years old, Hazard already has over 100 appearances for Lille, and was one of the key players in their league win last year. He was named the youngest ever recipient of the Ligue 1 player of the year award and has drawn comparisons with Lionel Messi and especially Cristiano Ronaldo. Possesses great Pace, Flair and Finishing. His range of passing has made him an effective creative player as well. Has been rumoured a lot with Arsenal, although Lille have been quick to say he is staying, his talent can't be ignored and Lille may part with him for £20 million, which could be seen as a bargain in years to come.
Neymar
Age: 19
Nationality: Brazilian
Position: Forward
Value: £40 million
The newest prodigy to emerge from Brazil, he has drawn many comparisons with just about every great player theres been. Already in the Brazilian setup and a star in his home nations league for Santos, he is undoubtedly attracting interest from Europe's top clubs and turned down Chelsea last year to stay in Brazil. He has great pace, flair and an ability to finish brilliantly. He does have a bit of an ego issue and this would need a lot of nursing. He plays a free role in the Santos attack and could be moved on to the wing, but such talent comes at an extremely high price.
Luka Modric
Age: 25
Nationality: Croatian
Position: Midfielder
Value: £35 million
Chelsea have already had a bid turned down for Modric this transfer window. With Modric wanting the move to the Blues to enhance his chances of winning silverware. Although Spurs said that Modric wouldn't leave, Redknapp is reported to have asked Daniel Levy to let him leave to free up the funds. A player who possesses great vision, flair and an ability to play with both feet. Would be a great addition to the squad.
Juan Mata
Age: 23
Nationality: Spanish
Position: Winger/Midfielder
Current Club: Valencia
Value: £25 million
The ex-Real Madrid trainee has proved what Madrid what they are missing in recent seasons. Bagged the most assists and the third most goals at the European U-21 championships in Denmark this summer. Known for his great pace, intelligence on the pitch and goalscoring ability. Has attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham this summer, but with Wenger saying no deal, and Spurs having a lack of funds, this could be Chelsea's opportunity to grasp.
Adam Johnson
Age: 24
Nationality: English
Position: Winger
Current Club: Manchester City
Value: £20 million
Another of these modern wingers, who plays on the opposite side to what their dominant foot suggests, and cuts in for a shot or cross, Johnson is underrated at City and hasn't looked like he is part of Mancini's first team plans this season, although he has come out to say he is. Blessed with extreme pace and agility as well as a brilliant left foot, he could be tempted to join Chelsea if a good enough offer came in for their eyes.
Mario Götze
Age: 19
Nationality: German
Position: Attacking Midfielder
Current Club: Borussia Dortmund
Value: £20 million
A key player at 18 years old in Dortmund's German league triumph last season, along with breaking into the senior German set up, catching the attention of many clubs with an outstanding performance in the 3-2 friendly win over Brazil, Götze is now hot property. A playmaker with pace, outstanding technical skill and creativity along with an eye for goal from midfield, Manchester United are apparently interested in him as an alternative to Sneijder, Chelsea should be too.
Villas Boas has said that he is in the market for these kinds of players, who would all be great additions to the squad. Chelsea do need flair players to liven up a stale attack, and Villas-Boas has recognised this, and will be looking to make signings in the next couple of weeks before the transfer window ends.
